Crone and Poirier looking to step it up in Paris

Vanessa Crone and Paul Poirier surprised pretty much everyone, including themselves, by winning the silver ice dance medal at Skate Canada earlier this month.

Tuesday, they were on their way to their second ISU Grand Prix event in Paris, where landing on the podium will be a much tougher assignment.

Fresh off the junior circuit with a world silver medal to their credit, the Toronto-based teens arrived in Ottawa with few expectations -- other than to deliver the best performances possible in their senior international debut.

Crone, 18, and Poirier, 17, did just that, and, thanks in part to major miscues by the world's seventh-ranked couple Nathalie Pechalat and Fabian Bourzat, the young Canadians glided into second place behind Meryl Davis and Charlie White, of the U.S. The Americans had finished sixth at the 2008 World Championships.

At Trophée Eric Bompard, the field will include the home-country's world champion couple, Isabelle Delobel and Olivier Schoenfelder, who won gold at Skate America in October. Also on the roster are Federica Faiella and Massimo Scali, of Italy, and Sinead Kerr and John Kerr, of Great Britain, the bronze medalists in Everett, Wash. The Italians and the Brits ranked fifth and eighth, respectively, at the 2008 worlds.

"The dance event [in Paris] is a strong one," said Mike Slipchuk, Skate Canada's high performance director. "It will be good for them [Crone and Poirier] to see where they fit in. There's always new people to gauge yourself against."

Not to take anything away from the standing ovation-worthy free dance with which Crone and Poirier excited the fans at Skate Canada, but the reality their total score (162.13) would not have been medal material at either Skate America or last week's Cup of China.

Takahashi out of Cup of China

The Japanese Skating Federation announced Tuesday that Daisuke Takahashi has withdrawn from the Cup of China, to take place in Beijing later this week. The 22-year-old skater suffered a right knee injury in practice last Friday. He will undergo tests to determine the extent of this injury and whether he will be able to compete at his second Grand Prix event, the NHK Trophy, which begins in Tokyo on Nov. 27. Takahashi won a world silver medal in 2007 and placed fourth in 2008. He was considered the favorite to win the Cup of China. In his absence, European champion Tomas Verner of the Czech Republic and American Stephen Carriere, who won the world junior title in 2007, are expected to contend for top honors.

It's not time to give up on Meissner

Time to push the panic button? Time to buy Kimmie Meissner a gold retirement watch and thank her for her service to figure skating?

Not so fast. Rome, as skating analyst Julius Caesar used to say, wasn't built in a day.

Meissner, who suffered through another poor performance last weekend at Skate America, is a puzzle at this point in her career. Good practices and good warm-ups, but bad when the judges are watching.

That's not the recipe for a championship.

From a resume standpoint, the girl from Bel Air has checked most of the boxes -- Olympic appearance, world title and national championship -- all by the age of 18. Meissner is one of only two U.S. women to land a triple axel, the other being Tonya Harding, she of knee-whacking fame.

But from December 2007 until now, it has been as if Meissner had been kidnapped by aliens and replaced by an exact duplicate, albeit one who prefers another sport. After winning gold and silver during last year's Grand Prix season, she finished last at the Grand Prix Final and seventh at nationals and worlds. The performance at worlds was considered a triumph given the meltdown at nationals.

Changing coaches and training sites, Meissner set out to reclaim her place as one of America's best. But in less than seven minutes of skating, she racked up three falls and finished eighth.

The skater looked bewildered when she met with reporters. Her primary coach, the 36-year veteran Richard Callaghan, was grim-faced.

Buttle has no regets about retirement

Jeff Buttle helped Canada to the medal podium at the 2008 World Figure Skating Championships in Sweden in March, winning the gold medal in men’s singles.

Then, with the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games looming, Buttle shocked the skating world by announcing his retirement. He’d accomplished everything he’d set out to, he said.

Heading into this weekend’s Skate Canada, an event in which he finished third last year, the 26-year-old has no regrets about last month’s decision.

"Retirement has been good to me," he said from Detroit on Wednesday, during an interview to announce Holiday Festival On Ice, an annual skating extravaganza that will visit Halifax Metro Centre for the first time on Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. Also performing in the show, with the theme of A Celtic Christmas, will be Kurt Browning, Sasha Cohen, Marie-France Dubreuil and Patrice Lauzon, Jennifer Robinson, Steven Cousins and Edmunston, New Brunswick’s Shawn Sawyer, who made his Olympic debut in 2006 in Torino and is hoping to make the squad for Vancouver.

"I’m still doing what I love — skating. The part I love the most is performing, so I feel very fortunate to still be doing what I love," he said, noting one of the programs he will be doing on the Stars On Ice tour in Canada, Japan and selected U.S. cities this winter, was created for the upcoming competitive season with renowned choreographer David Wilson.

When announcing his retirement, Buttle said he wanted to return to his studies in chemical engineering at the University of Toronto, but for now that’s on hold as he is even busier in terms of travel.

Next stop on Buttle’s itinerary is a gig at Home Sense Skate Canada International in Ottawa today (Thursday) through Sunday.

Back from injury, figure skater Lysacek has new style, outlook

When Evan Lysacek was training for the world championships last winter, he took a spill that forever changed his figure skating.

Lysacek, competing in this weekend's Skate Canada in Ottawa, is considered one of the medal favorites at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. He said after what happened, he is "very happy to be skating again."

Lysacek had repeated as national champion in January, edging Johnny Weir on a tiebreaker. Lysacek's blade broke on a practice jump six days before worlds in March. He smashed into the ice, dislocating his shoulder and elbow and damaging ligaments in both joints, and had to sit out worlds.

He had limited ice time for two months. His brain was in overdrive wondering how he could have prevented the accident.

"I was way overbooked," he said. "I had no time to breathe, no time to rest, barely enough time to train. Mentally, I just felt like I'd lost the love of skating."

He got back the love by limiting his commitments and accepting an offer from Russian skating coach Tatiana Tarasova. "I realized I was in a hole and needed to dig myself out," Lysacek said. "I was sort of lost here in California."

So off he went to Moscow in May for three weeks. He learned a new style of movement from Tarasova, who coached Olympic gold medalists Ilia Kulik and Alexei Yagudin.
