The Japanese Skating Federation announced Tuesday that
Daisuke Takahashi has withdrawn from the
Cup of China, to take place in Beijing later this week. The 22-year-old skater suffered a right knee injury in practice last Friday. He will undergo tests to determine the extent of this injury and whether he will be able to compete at his second Grand Prix event, the
NHK Trophy, which begins in Tokyo on Nov. 27. Takahashi won a world silver medal in 2007 and placed fourth in 2008. He was considered the favorite to win the Cup of China. In his absence, European champion
Tomas Verner of the Czech Republic and American
Stephen Carriere, who won the world junior title in 2007, are expected to contend for top honors.
